Welcome to EZPNO!
Let the EZPNO Tutor show you how to play your favorite songs step-by-
step using 3D graphics. Load one of the sample songs or import any
standard MIDI file and follow the 88-key piano. Zoom in for better
visualization and let EZPNO show you the notes to press, the fingers
to use, and how long to hold each note. Test your sight-reading skills
with a MIDI keyboard as EZPNO tracks your progress and keeps score.
Create original works or enter your favorite sheet music using the
powerful features of the EZPNO Editor. Simply open the Edit Window, and
place each note at the desired line or space on the staff. Complete the
measure by adding rests, triplets, ties, and song lyrics.
When you are ready, fire up the EZPNO Player to listen to your new creation.
Set the tempo and volume, and choose among 128 instruments. Follow the
scrolling song lyrics for karaoke-style sing-alongs.
Have fun!
Andy Kula

1.3 Disabled editing features in pre-registered version
───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
You can have immediate access to the full power of EZPNO just by
calling me at 1-800-313-6070. I will give you a special registration key
that you may input at program start-up.
Prior to registration, the following editing features have been disabled:
(1) Reloading of edited song files for use with a sound card
The pre-registered version of EZPNO is designed so that you may create
music notation, hear how it sounds on your sound card, and save it
to disk as often as you like.
However, once you have cleared the song from memory (eg. by loading
another song, exiting the program, etc.), you may reload your work
only when the program is operating in "PC speaker mode" or
"Quiet mode".
If you have a sound card or MIDI interface connected to your system,
you may force one of these modes with a command line switch (-pc for
PC speaker mode, -q for Quiet mode).
eg. At the DOS prompt type: ezpno -pc
This will force the program to run in PC speaker mode.
(see 3.2 EZPNO command line switches).
(2) Saving a song as a standard MIDI file
In the registered version of EZPNO, a song may be saved as a standard
MIDI file (format 1.0). This file format is a music industry standard,
and is recognized by many other music software products.
(3) Saving/Loading the measure edit buffer
In the registered version of EZPNO, song measures that have been
cut or copied may be saved to disk so that song parts can be
transferred between songs.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
2.0 System Requirements
───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
IBM compatible PC with hard disk and 1 floppy disk drive
MS-DOS 3.3 or greater
VGA graphics adaptor
640K RAM
Mouse optional
Sound card / MIDI interface recommended
2.1 Math Coprocessor
───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
EZPNO features an full 88-key three-dimensional piano in regular
and zoom views. If you have a math coprocessor (DX chip), you may
set [3D draw] in the Global Settings dialogue box (Function key <F6>).
This will enhance the three-dimensional quality of the images. If you
do not have a math coprocessor, the drawing will be slow in this mode.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
3.0 Installation
───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
EZPNO must be installed on the hard drive to operate correctly.
Insert the program diskette into drive A.
At the DOS prompt, type a:install and press <Enter>.
(replace b: for a: for floppy drive B)
3.1 Starting the Program
───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
Be sure to be in the \EZPNO directory when you start the
program. EZPNO searches only the current directory for its
supporting files. Type e-z-p-n-o to start the application.
3.2 EZPNO command line switches
───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
The following switches may be typed after 'e-z-p-n-o' at the DOS prompt:
-? Display all command line arguments.
-i[xx] Override MPU401 IRQ (default=2)
-p[xxx] Override MPU401 port address (default=330h)
-q Quiet mode.
-pc Force PC speaker.
-mpu Force Roland MPU401.
-sb Force Sound Blaster.
-gus Force UltraSound driver.
-vmp Force Voyetra VMP driver.
-x[xxxx] Detects and uses Extended memory(XMS) for program overlays.
Sometimes EZPNO loads program code from disk (eg. for
dialogue boxes, on-line help). With this switch enabled,
EZPNO can save overlays in XMS for faster retrieval. This may
improve program performance. A starting address may be set in
kilobytes (eg. ezpno -x1000: use XMS at address 1,000,000).
-e Detects and uses Expanded memory(EMS) for program overlays.
See description above for XMS.
3.3 3D Piano Image Installation
───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
When loading EZPNO for the first time, it will run a quick installation
program to create 3D piano image files. Simply follow the instructions
on the screen.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
4.0 Sound Card / MIDI Interface drivers
───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
EZPNO automatically searches for the sound card or driver installed on
your system. If no sound card or driver is found, EZPNO uses the PC speaker
for sound. If more than one card is installed, you must specify the card
desired on the command line (see 3.2 EZPNO command line switches).
The following sound cards are currently supported:
Sound Card/MIDI Interface driver
========================= ======
Roland MPU401, or compatible -
Sound Blaster -
Advanced Gravis UltraSound ultramid
Others Voyetra VMP drivers
4.1 Roland MPU401
───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
The default IRQ is 2. The default MIDI port address is 330h.
These settings may be overrided on the command line with the
-i switch or the -p switch respectively.
eg. ezpno -i5 -p300
This command sets EZPNO to use IRQ 5 and port address 300h.
(see 3.2 EZPNO command line switches).
4.2 Sound Blaster
───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
The BLASTER environment variable must be set in order for EZPNO to
use the Sound Blaster card correctly.
eg. SET BLASTER=A220 I7 D1 T3
(A=Base port I/O address, I=IRQ number,
D=DMA channel, T=Sound Blaster version)
You should have a line that looks like this in your autoexec.bat file.
See the Sound Blaster user manual for more details.
To use the Sound Blaster MIDI interface adaptor, your card must have
DSP ROM version 2.00 or later.
4.3 Advanced Gravis UltraSound
───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
The ultramid driver must be loaded prior to running EZPNO. To load, simply
type 'u-l-t-r-a-m-i-d' at the DOS prompt. The following command line
switches may be used with ultramid:
-16 Use 16-bit patches for improved sound performance. The
default is 8-bit.
-c Preloads a 256K, 512K 768K or 1024K patch library, depending
on how much memory you have on your UltraSound card.
-f Unload ultramid from memory
-m[xxx] [1-127] Sets the master volume for music. The default
volume is 127.
-d[path] Use an alternate path for finding the ultramid configuration
file and for finding patches. The path should include a
trailing backslash (e.g.) -dc:\game\
4.4 Other sound cards
───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
EZPNO supports many more sound cards via the VMP drivers created by
Voyetra Technologies. Call Kula Software at (604)921-5974 for more
information as to how to obtain these drivers.
